David Harris

A native Washingtonian, David dropped out of high school to take care of his girlfriend and their daughter.  He worked a variety of low paying jobs, but lacked insurance, and after developing high blood pressure and heart disease he became too sick to work.

After becoming homeless, David lived on the street for about three years.  He stayed briefly in a shelter, but felt safer outside.  "The staff treated us like trash."

Through a service provider he was able to secure Social Security benefits.  He has lived in his current residence for over two years, and has been speaking with NCH since 2001.  He writes poetry and hold writing workshops at The Church of the Pilgrims in Northwest DC.  David hopes to continue his education and eventually return to the workforce.
